Marriage to Siddhi and Buddhi

← Back to Puranic Stories

Shree Ganesh's victory in the contest for Narada's mango carried consequences beyond the fruit itself: in the Shiva Purana's account, this same demonstration of wisdom also secured him marriage to Siddhi and Buddhi, the two daughters of Prajapati Vishwaroopa.

Two Brides, Two Qualities

Siddhi, representing spiritual power and accomplishment, and Buddhi, representing intellect and discernment, were considered among the most desirable companions any deity could hope to marry — and it was this same contest of wisdom, more than force or status, that ultimately won them for Shree Ganesh.

A Celestial Ceremony

Tradition holds that Vishvakarman, the divine architect, arranged a grand celestial wedding ceremony for this union, attended by gods and sages alike, marking Shree Ganesh's marriage as an event of genuine cosmic significance rather than a small, private affair.

What This Marriage Reveals

That Siddhi and Buddhi became his consorts through wisdom rather than conquest fits naturally with everything the mango contest had already shown: that Shree Ganesh's truest strength has always been the clarity and depth of his understanding.
