The Demon Gajamukhasura

← Back to Puranic Stories

Alongside the Mudgala Purana's eight great incarnations stands a separate, equally well-loved account explaining Shree Ganesh's mouse vahana — the story of Gajamukhasura, an elephant-faced demon whose defeat differs from, yet stands alongside, the more widely known account of Krauncha found elsewhere in this collection.

An Elephant-Faced Threat

Gajamukhasura earned near invincibility through intense penance directed toward Shiva, and rather than using this power wisely, turned to pride and aggression, spreading fear through the three worlds until Shiva himself declared that only Shree Ganesh could overcome him.

A Battle Won Through the Broken Tusk

Facing a demon protected against ordinary weapons, Shree Ganesh broke off his own tusk and fashioned it into a lance, using this same tusk — already familiar from his service to sage Vyasa — to finally pierce and defeat Gajamukhasura where other weapons could not succeed.

A Transformation Into Devotion

Attempting to flee in defeat, Gajamukhasura transformed himself into a small mouse, hoping to escape unnoticed — but Shree Ganesh, recognizing him still, responded not with further violence but with compassion, transforming the humbled demon into Mooshika, his devoted vehicle. Hindu tradition preserves more than one account of how this small creature came to serve him; this collection holds both honestly, as different threads of the same sacred history.
