The Mahotkata Avatar

← Back to Puranic Stories

The Ganesha Purana describes four great incarnations of Shree Ganesh, one for each of the four ages of the world, and the first among them, appearing in the Krita Yuga, is Mahotkata Vinayaka — red-complexioned and possessed of ten powerful arms.

Born to Kashyapa and Aditi

Unlike his more familiar identity as the son of Shiva and Parvati, this incarnation is described as born to the sage Kashyapa and his wife Aditi, entering the world of the very first age specifically to confront the forces of unrighteousness that threatened it.

A Warrior's Purpose

Mahotkata's ten arms and formidable bearing suited the scale of the task before him: overcoming three great demons of this age — the brothers Devantaka and Narantaka, and Dhumraksha — each a serious threat to dharma in the earliest age of the world.

What Devotees Seek

Mahotkata's story reminds devotees that Shree Ganesh's presence in the world did not begin only with his familiar birth to Shiva and Parvati, but stretches back, in the Puranic account, to the very first age of creation itself.
