Ganesha in the Mangal Kavyas

← Back to Regional Sacred Stories

The Mangal Kavyas, a body of devotional narrative poetry composed in medieval Bengal, hold a special place for Shree Ganesh — invoked not only as a deity of worship but as a guardian of the very manuscripts that carried these poems forward.

A Literary Tradition of Invocation

Poets composing these long narrative works, dedicated to deities such as Manasa and Chandi, traditionally opened with an invocation to Shree Ganesh, following the widespread custom of beginning any significant undertaking, written or otherwise, with his blessing.

Guardian of the Manuscript Itself

Beyond the invocation, tradition holds that Shree Ganesh's protection was sought specifically for the physical manuscript — palm-leaf and paper being vulnerable to rats, insects, and the passage of time — asking the remover of obstacles to guard against the loss of the work itself before it could reach its readers.

What Devotees Seek

Writers, scholars, and anyone engaged in preserving written work continue to draw on this same tradition, invoking Shree Ganesh's protection not only over the beginning of their labor but over its lasting survival.
