Invoked Even at the Final Obstacle

← Back to Regional Sacred Stories

The most famous account of a devotee protected from an untimely death belongs, in verified tradition, to the sage Markandeya, saved by Lord Shiva himself when Yama, the god of death, came to claim him. Yet devotees of Shree Ganesh find their own meaning in this same theme.

Shiva's Protection of Markandeya

As that well-established story is told, young Markandeya, devoted entirely to Shiva and destined to die at sixteen, clung to the Shiva Linga as Yama's noose approached. Shiva himself intervened, and Markandeya was granted eternal youth — a story that belongs properly and specifically to Shiva's grace.

Ganesha as the First Obstacle Removed

Shree Ganesh's own connection to this theme lies elsewhere: as the deity invoked at the beginning of every undertaking to clear what stands in the way, devotees have long extended that same trust to the greatest obstacle of all — fear itself, including the fear of death — asking for the courage and peace that removes the obstacle within, even when the outcome itself rests with a greater power.

What Devotees Seek

Those facing serious illness or grief invoke Shree Ganesh in this spirit, seeking not a literal reenactment of Markandeya's rescue, but the same steadying courage his presence has offered throughout every other obstacle in a devotee's life.
