The story of Gokarna and its Mahabaleshwar temple in coastal Karnataka begins far away, with Ravana's fierce penance on Mount Kailash and a boon that came with an unbreakable condition.
A Boon Sought for His Mother
As the story is told, Ravana's mother was a devoted worshipper of a Shiva Linga that had been taken from her, and Ravana, moved by her devotion, undertook severe penance at Kailash to win the Atmalinga itself — the very embodiment of Shiva — and carry it back for her.
A Condition That Would Prove Decisive
Shiva granted the Atmalinga on one unyielding condition: wherever it touched the ground, it would remain fixed there permanently. Carrying an object of this weight and consequence, Ravana began his long journey home, unaware of what awaited him near the coastal town of Gokarna.
What Devotees Seek
This story sets the stage for one of Shree Ganesh's most celebrated interventions, carried forward in the account of the Brahmin boy who met Ravana at Gokarna at the most crucial possible moment.
