The Taming of Mooshika

← Back to Regional Sacred Stories

Every image of Shree Ganesh seated upon his small mouse carries within it the story of Mooshika — once a being of an entirely different scale, transformed by a sage's curse and, in time, brought gently under Shree Ganesh's care.

A Curse from an Unintended Offense

As the Ganesha Purana tells it, the Gandharva Krauncha, a celestial musician, accidentally stepped upon the foot of the sage Vamadeva while hurrying through Indra's court. Enraged, Vamadeva cursed him, and Krauncha was transformed into a rat — but one of enormous, mountainous size, wreaking destruction wherever he went.

A Gentle Restraint, Not a Battle

When the rampaging creature reached the ashram where Shree Ganesh was present, he calmly looped his noose, the Pasha, around it. Rather than a violent struggle, what followed was almost tender: the mouse, unable to bear Shree Ganesh's weight once he climbed upon it, asked to be made lighter, and Shree Ganesh graciously agreed, taking the newly gentled creature as his vehicle from then on.

What Devotees Seek

Devotees see in Mooshika's transformation a reminder that even the most disruptive forces, once brought gently under wise guidance, can become devoted and useful companions rather than enemies to be destroyed.
