Among the most beloved stories of devotion outweighing wealth is the Tulabharam of Sri Krishna — a story belonging properly to Rukmini's own faith, but one that devotees of Shree Ganesh find deeply resonant with a lesson he teaches in his own right.
A Contest of Riches
As the story is told, Satyabhama, told by the sage Narada that Krishna held Rukmini in deeper affection, challenged this by agreeing to "buy back" Krishna with his weight in gold. Despite piling the wealth of Dwaraka onto the scale, it would not balance against him.
What Balanced the Scale
Rukmini, asked to try, ordered all the gold and jewels removed, and placed instead a single leaf of Tulsi upon the scale with quiet prayer. It was this humble leaf, offered purely, that balanced perfectly against Krishna himself.
What Devotees Seek
Devotees of Shree Ganesh recognize in this story the very same truth found in his own tradition of the mud modak and the leaf, flower, and water accepted with love — that sincerity, however small, outweighs any treasure offered without it.
