Among the best-loved stories illustrating Shree Ganesh's wisdom is the contest of the circumambulation of the universe, set against his brother Kartikeya, in which cleverness triumphs over sheer speed.
A Race Around Creation
The story tells of a competition proposed between the two divine sons of Shiva and Parvati: whoever could circle the entire universe three times first would win a coveted prize, often remembered as a golden mango or the honor of being wed first. Kartikeya, mounted on his swift peacock, set off at once across the cosmos.
Where the Universe Truly Resides
Shree Ganesh, instead of racing outward, walked three slow circles around his parents, Shiva and Parvati, and declared the contest won — reasoning that one's parents, who gave rise to one's very existence, contain within themselves the entire universe, making any journey around them equal to circling all of creation. His parents, delighted by the wisdom of this reasoning, agreed and awarded him the prize.
What Devotees Seek
This story is recalled whenever devotees face a problem that seems to demand brute effort, as a reminder that insight, not exertion alone, is often the truer path to what is being sought.
