The conclusion of the Gokarna story explains both the name of the great Mahabaleshwar temple and the origin of the town's own name, Gokarna — "the ear of the cow" — a small but permanent trace of Ravana's fury.
An Attempt That Could Not Succeed
Discovering that the Atmalinga had been fixed to the earth, Ravana, enraged, attempted with all his great strength to uproot it, but succeeded only in reshaping its outer form, since Shiva's condition had already been fulfilled the instant it touched the ground.
The Trace That Remains
In his fury, Ravana is remembered pursuing the disguised boy and the cow he had brought as part of the disguise; catching only the animal's ear as the rest sank into the earth, an event tradition holds gave the town of Gokarna its lasting name.
Why "Mahabaleshwar"
Exhausted by his failed effort, Ravana himself is remembered giving the Linga the name Mahabaleshwar — "Lord of Great Strength" — an acknowledgment, even in defeat, of the power that had proven impossible for him to move. Devotees still visit this temple today, honoring both Shiva's unmovable presence and Shree Ganesh's quiet role in securing it there.
